The boys’ grammar school is local to the playing fields in Cheam and opened in 1899. Although it is a boys’ grammar school, girls are welcome into Sixth Form. The School is divided into lower (years 7-9) and upper (years 10-11). The School is highly competitive and has continuously been ranked as one of the top state schools in the country, having been placed 13th nationwide in the academic leagues’ table in 2015.
There are 135 places available in year 7.
Candidates who wish to sit the entrance exams must complete the Supplementary Information form found on the School’s website when registration is open to applicants. Suppose the candidate is successful in the SET exam. In that case, they are invited to the second stage of examination, where they must complete and return the Common Application Form with Sutton Grammar school listed to their local authority by the deadline.
The exam consists of two parts. The first stage is the SET exam, where candidates undergo English and Mathematics. The second stage is an examination set by the School, consisting of Mathematics and English; the maths paper includes standard questions, and the English, a creative writing exercise.
