The girls’ grammar school was founded in 1938 and specialises in science and languages. It is one of the top-ranking state schools for GCSE results in 2019 and is highly competitive. It has also been ranked 13th best nationally by the Department for Education.
There are 210 places available in year 7. 80 places are awarded each year to those living inside or outside the catchment area.
When registration is open, candidates who wish to sit the entrance exams must complete the Supplementary Information form found on the School’s website. Suppose the candidate is successful in the SET exam. In that case, they are invited to the second stage of examination, where they must complete and return the Common Application Form to their local authority by the deadline.
The exam consists of two parts. The first stage is SET, consisting of English and Mathematics; both are multiple choice. The second stage is an examination set by the School; based on Mathematics and English; maths is formed of standard questions, and English is a creative writing exercise.
